Which of the Following is Hormone-Releasing IUD (A) Lippes Loop (B) CuT (C) Multiload 375 (D) LNG

Answer: (D) LNG

The levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device LNG is a  contraceptive method

LNG provides dual advantage:

  1. Intrauterine
  2. Hormonal contraception

Furthermore, an added advantage is the non-contraceptive benefits. For instance, for menorrhagia it is also a treatment option.

Levonorgestrel, is a second generation progestin. It is a potent IUD.

Mechanism of Action of LNG:

  1. Thickening of the cervical mucus.

  2. Suppression of the proliferative process of endometrium. The decidualization process of the stroma is suppressed).

  3. Inhibits sperm motility

  4. Makes the survival of the sperm difficult by making the  environment hostile.

  5. Sperm capacitation

The overall effect of hormone releasing IUD- Levonorgestrel, is to prevent fertilization.
