Q: Which are the smallest cells in the human body?

Anwer: Cells are the most basic building blocks in all living beings. There are trillions of cells present in the human body. They compose the structure of every single organ and tissue of the body. They can be seen as minute packages that consist of several remote systems to enable the body to function.

Cells communicate internally and create the whole organism. The mean size of a typical human cell is approximately 100 um in diameter. However, the smallest cell in the human body in terms of length is the Cerebellum’s Granule Cell. It is estimated that there are about 50 billion such cells in the human body. Cerebellum’s Granule Cells form the most neurons in the brain. They contribute to around ¾ th of the total neurons in a human brain. These cells are located in the cerebellum. Its presynaptic connections include Golgi cells and mossy fibers. Its postsynaptic connections include fibers parallel to the cerebellar cortex.

Cerebellum’s Granule Cells get the necessary inputs from mossy fibers. They are very tiny and packed densely, due to which it is very tough to analyse, record, and study their spike activities. Such cells possess only four to five dendrites. These dendrites form dendritic claws after their enlargement at the end.

These cells utilise glutamate for the purpose of neurotransmitters. The average size of the Cerebellum’s Granule Cell is about 4 um to 4.5 um. Considering the normal development, sonic hedgehog signals stimulate the rapid proliferation of CGNPs (Cerebellar granule neuron progenitors) in the external layer. It should be noted that according to the suggestions of scientists, the sperm cell is the smallest in the human body in terms of volume. The cell head is approximately 5.1 micrometers by 3.1 micrometers.
