Where are Chromosomes present in a Cell

Where are chromosomes present in a cell? Find the answer to this question and access a vast question customised for students.

Answer: Chromosomes are thread-like structures present in the nucleus of a cell in both animal and plant cells. They contain information of inheritance of the parents in the form of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) from one generation to another. They are further organised into genes.

The chromosomes in a eukaryotic cell contain DNA, RNA and proteins. DNA is tightly coiled around proteins many times to make up the structure of chromosomes. In a human body, there are 23 pairs of chromosomes contained in each cell; that is 46 in total. Their proper location, number and structure are crucial. Since, if there is defect, misplacement or incorrect number of chromosomes present, they can lead to serious diseases or health problems. For example, down syndrome in children, cancer etc.
