Answer: The highest quantity of air a human may inhale before reaching maximal expiration is known as vital capacity (VC). It is equivalent to the total of the inspiratory, tidal, and expiratory reserve volumes. It roughly corresponds to Forced Vital Capacity (FVC).
A wet or conventional spirometer can assess a person’s vital capacity. A diagnosis of underlying lung disease can be made using the pulse rate in conjunction with other physiological measurements. Additionally, the vital capacity is utilized to assess the degree of respiratory muscle participation in neuromuscular disease and therefore can direct therapy choices in myasthenic crises and Guillain-Barré syndrome.
RV + VC = TLC.
Therefore, residual volume and total lung capacity (TLC) make up vital capacity (RV).
