Answer: Saliva is known to be a watery liquid substance that is secreted by the salivary glands. The salivary glands are present within the mouth. The salivary glands play a vital role in digestion of starch in food. Saliva tends to moisten as well as lubricate the food. This makes it easier to swallow the food. 

There’s an enzyme called amylase. Amylase is also known as salivary amylase. Amylase is present within saliva. Amylase aids in the breakdown of starch into a simple sugar known as Maltose. Maltose gets easily absorbed by the body. Thus, saliva plays a significant role in the digestion of food within the body.
