What is Syngamy

Answer:

Angiosperms have double fertilization, in which two nuclei (of sperm) from each pollen tube fertilize two additional cells in the ovary. When one of the sperm cells fertilizes one of the egg cells, a diploid zygote is created. This diploid zygote is presently developing into an embryo. Syngamy refers to the fusing of cells in such a situation. It’s worth noting that syngamy is also known as genuine fusion or generative fertilization.

Syngamy can be divided into two types based on the source of fusion gametes. These are:

  1. Self Fertilization (also known as – Endogamy)
  2. Cross Fertilization (also known as – Exogamy)
