What is Pisciculture

Answer: Fish is one of the healthy dietary products which are rich in proteins and different minerals. The term ‘pisciculture’ simply means the rearing, transplantation, and breeding of fish in artificial ways. This type of rearing of fish is mainly done due to commercial purposes (selling) and also for domestic purposes or needs. In general form, pisciculture means the production of fish, mainly the fish that can grow fast is chosen for pisciculture.

Aquaculture technique is introduced in pisciculture; aquaculture technique takes place through induced breeding by the pituitary hormone management which helps in the cultivation of seed fish. After the young one hatches from eggs, they are nursed and cultivated. There are generally two forms of pisciculture, these are:

  • Monoculture- It is a type of culture that includes culturing and growing only one kind of species in the culture system. Monoculture is the oldest and most common form. Monoculture of fishery yields a high quality of fish and the production occurs in a huge amount. Some of the common fishes that are monoculture like catfish, shrimp, common carp, milkfish, etc. One of the significant advantages of monoculture is- as only one type of fish species is cultivated and harvested at a time in a single place therefore this type of pisciculture is easy to manage
  • Polyculture – Polyculture is referred to as the rearing of more than one species of fish in a particular area. Polyculture is also known as mixed or composite fish farming. Polyculture is just the reciprocation of monoculture. One of the difficult areas of Polyculture is that as in Polyculture different species are cultivated, each species has different food habits and need to be fed carefully so that it can survive in a healthy condition. One of the significant advantages of Polyculture is that many species of fish are grown at a time
