Answer: As we know that fruits are developed in plants that contain flowers (flowering plants). Fruits are called false fruit when they grow from other parts of flowers and non-fertilized ovaries. Fruits are only produced by angiosperms or flowering plants.

There are several processes in the formation of fruits from the flower. The process includes pollination, and fertilization, as a result of fertilization the zygote is formed and the ovary gradually develops into a fruit. There are two types of fruits, known as true fruit and false fruit. False fruit can be defined as a type of fruit that is formulated from the ovary that is ripened and a number of other areas of flowers like the thalamus, receptacle or base, the perianth, calyx, or inflorescence. False fruit develops without fertilization from some tissues that are exterior of the carpel. This type of fruit is also known as pseudocarp or pseudo fruits.

Example: Apple – The formation of an apple does not include the ovary of a flower. In an apple the portion we eat is formed from the thalamus (it is a large portion or structure which is visible at the flower’s base), therefore thalamus contributes to the formation of fruit. So, the apple is known as false fruit.
