What is Biochemical Oxygen Demand

Answer: The levels of soluble oxygen needed by aerobic bacteria to decompose organic compounds in a water sample at a certain temperature and period is described as Biochemical Oxygen Demand. In layman’s terms, the BOD is the quantity of oxygen required by biological organisms like bacteria in particular sample water for the oxidizing process of decomposition of organic materials.

Significance

  • BOD measures the quantity of oxygen used by microorganisms in the breakdown of organic materials in bodies of water
  • It represents the quantity of organic contamination in an aquatic habitat
  • Also controls the COD materials
  • Aerobic organisms are used in sewage disposal or treatment of wastewater to degrade and decompose organic pollutants
  • Helps determine the concentration of organic matter in sewage, soils, sludge,  waste, sediment and other materials.
  • It also detects the respiration rate in living creatures
