What are polytene chromosomes and how are they formed

Answer: Polytene chromosomes can have as much as a thousand strands of DNA and hence is large enabling high functioning in specific tissues. A suitable example would be an insect’s salivary glands. These are formed through repeatedly replicating homologous chromosomes, provided that the sister chromatid that gets replicated does not undergo separation. The alignment of the DNA molecules remains aligned in a lateral manner.
