What are milch animals?

Milch animals have been domesticated for their milk and have a high milk production rate. Cows with buffaloes have been the most common milch animals in India. Goats, sheep, and even camels even provide milk in small doses. Goat’s milk has better nutritional content than cow’s and buffalo’s milk. Milk from goats isn’t generated in significant quantities. Buffalo milk is less nutritious and difficult to digest than cow milk. Milk from cows is not supplied in vast quantities. In India, there seem to be approximately thirty indigenous cow breeds.

Cows, both male and female, were divided into three categories based on their usefulness. Such animals include draught, dual-purpose, as well as dairy. Draught breeds like Kangayam, Amritmahal, and Hallikar are most often utilised for ploughing, pulling carts, and hauling materials in agriculture. This breed’s females produce little milk. To increase milk production, cross-breeding is beneficial.

Cross-bred cows produce two to three times the milk that native cows do. Red Sindhi, Sahiwal, and Gir are indigenous Indian breeds with exceptional milk yields. Jersey, Holstein Friesian, and Brown Swiss cows are exotic and even foreign breeds. To improve the quality of Indian breeds, cows with high milk production capability and longer lactation periods were crossed with bullocks of alien breeds. Karan-Swiss or Frieswal were high-yielding milk cows produced by cross-breeding.
