Cork cells: To define cork cells, it can be said that, the dead cells that do not have intercellular spaces is called cork cells. Cork cells are found at the periphery of roots and stems of grown plants as they increase in girth. These cells also contain a chemical named suberin in their cell walls which does not allow them to be permeable to gases and water.

Functions of Cork cells:

  • Protects plants from external injury to some extent.
  • Reduce excess water loss.
  • Makes them more resistant to bacteria, fungi and other harmful microorganisms
