Answer: The hydrosphere contains the majority of the solid, liquid, and gaseous water on Earth. The hydrosphere extends from the Earth’s surface a few miles into the lithosphere and another seven miles into the atmosphere.
The majority of the water on Earth is found in the seas and oceans, rivers, lakes, ice caps, groundwater, wells and aquifers, and the atmosphere. However, the vast majority of this water is unfit for human consumption. Freshwater is the water that is appropriate for usage.
The aquifer is a porous rock formation or sedimentary layer that contains groundwater. The aquifer is replenished with groundwater when precipitation percolates through the earth. It will go through the aquifer and return to the surface through springs and wells. Aquifers are sometimes known as water-bearing layers or zones. Confined aquifers are covered by a layer of impermeable rock or clay, while unconfined aquifers are buried under a layer of permeable soil.
Thus, the earth’s water-bearing layer is an aquifer.
