Answer: Biology is defined as the study of living things, their origin, anatomy, morphology, physiology, behavior, and distribution. In simple terms, biology is the study of life science.

Cell: A cell is the smallest, basic unit of the living matter that composes all the processes of life. Externally bonded by a cell membrane, it contains a mass of cytoplasm, having one or more nuclei and other organelles. A count of trillions of cells together constitutes a human body.  According to the different functions performed by the cells, they are of different sizes and shapes.

George Emil Palade is recognised as the Father of the Cell.

Smallest cell:

Male gamete, often called sperm, is the smallest cell in the human body.

  • The measurement of the sperm head is around 4 micrometers in length. Originated in the testicles, the sperms are the male reproductive cells
  • The next smallest cell is the Cerebellum granule cell, which is around 4 micrometers to 4.5 micrometers, just slightly smaller than the RBCs, i.e, Red Blood cells

Largest cell:

The Female ovum or egg cell is the largest cell in the human body.

  • In the female body, the ovum is the reproductive cell. It has a 0.1 mm diameter and is about 20 times bigger than the sperm cells
  • A new organism is developed, when a female egg or ovum is fertilized with the sperm. The production of egg cells occurred in the ovaries

Male gamete is the smallest cell and the female ovum is the largest cell.

Other than the human body, the largest and smallest cells are given below:

An egg of the Ostrich is the largest cell, which is approximately 15 to 18 cm long and wide.

Mycoplasma or PPLO (Pleuropneumonia like organism) is the smallest cell.
