Q. Name any 5 commonly used weedicides

A weedicide is any chemical used to kill the weed and is generally used in agriculture to keep weed growth under control as it can be a nuisance to the desired crop and may interfere with its nutrition and growth.

Weedicides are often sprayed in the fields after diluting them to the required concentration. The weedicide must not harm the crops.

Following are the five commonly used weedicides:

1. 2, 4 Dichlorophenoxy acetic acids: It is a systemic herbicide that gets rid of most broadleaf weeds by inducing uncontrolled growth. It is ineffective on most grasses, though, for example, cereals and lawn turf. It was developed in the 1940s

2. Naphthalene acetic acid: Also known as Naphthylacetic acid. It is slightly toxic and is therefore used in low concentrations. It is also used as a synthetic plant hormone under the auxin family

3. Atrazine: It is widely used on corn, sugarcane, and sorghum fields and can be used before or after planting crops to control grassy and broadleaf weeds

4. Glyphosate SL: It is a broad-spectrum systemic weedicide and crop desiccant. It works by inhibiting a plant enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase. It is absorbed mainly by the foliage

5.  Metribuzin WP: It is absorbed mainly by the roots and through aerial application
