Illustrate the Lock and Key Hypothesis of Enzyme Action

Answer: Fischer suggested the Lock and Key theoretical framework for understanding the manner of activity of enzymes.

As per this hypothesis, the lock could be released if the proper key goes in the correct lock; or else, it cannot. Likewise, the byproduct is generated if the correct enzyme is used with the correct substrate; or else, the product is not formed.

The method by which the substrate are formed are as:

Enzyme + Substrate —–> Enzyme Substrate Complex

Enzyme Substrate Complex  ——–> Byproduct/Required Drug+Enzyme

Therefore, the shape of enzyme and substrate is important as per the hypothesis of lock and key mechanism.
