How is Black Soil Formed?

Answer: Black soil or Black Cotton Soil, also known as Regur are mineral soils that are volcanic/ trap lava derivatives. They are found mostly in the Deccan Plateau of India.

They are formed due to the weathering and denudation of indigenous rocks (basalt) or cooling and solidification of lava after volcanic eruption. This is also the reason why they are called lava soil and are rich in minerals like aluminium, potash, magnesium etc. It has high moisture-retaining capacity and is very fertile. It is a clayey soil and is best suitable to grow cotton.
