Question: Differentiate between back cross and test cross

Explanation

Back cross:

Back Cross is the breeding of the F1 hybrid with any of the two parents. If the F1 breeds with the homozygous dominant, due to the offspring becoming 100% dominant phenotypes.

Test cross:

Test Cross is a way of breeding between the recessive phenotype with the dominant phenotype. The dominant phenotype’s zygosity can easily be identified by this test. All the test crosses are considered backcrosses.

BACK CROSS

TEST CROSS

Breeding of the F1 hybrid with one of their parents.

Breeding of the F1 progeny with its other recessive phenotypic parents.

Not all the backcrosses are test crosses

All the test crosses are backcrosses.

Helps in the identification of the elite type of genotypes by checking on the gamete formation.

Helps in the identification of the genotype of the individual which is dominant.

The parent who is being crossed by F1 progeny can be a heterozygous dominant or can be homozygous dominant.

F1 progeny can always be crossed with homozygous recessives.
