Describe Vexillary Aestivation with a Suitable Example

Answer: Aestivation is the process of arranging floral elements inside a bud until it blooms into a flower. Aestivation is the arrangement of sepals or petals in a floral bud in relation to other members of the same whorl.

Following are the different types of aestivation:

  1. Twisted
  2. Valvate
  3. Imbricate
  4. Vexillary

Vexillary aestivation is a distinctive arrangement in which one giant petal covers the other smaller petals. The vexillum is the bigger petal, while the wings are the two bent petals that are laterally positioned. The two innermost, boat-shaped petals are known as keels in this location.

Polypetalous and papilionaceous are two examples.
