Define Variation

Answer: Variation refers to set of differences in characters or traits in the individual of a species. There can be several factors contributing to this variation but mainly they can be divided into two parts:

  • Environmental factors just like the Ultraviolet rays or the cigarette smoke etc.  can cause this variation which is then referred as Environmental variation
  • The other set includes Generic factors like mutation implying changes in an organism’s genetic sequence which might occur due to errors in the DNA replication process and this is referred as Genetic variation

Advantage

Variation within the species allows those organisms to adapt better to the changing environment increasing the chances of survival.

Disadvantage

It might lead to greater complexion in the body design
