Classify Resources Based on Origin and Availability

Classify resources based on origin and availability.

  • Anything in our surroundings that can be utilised to satisfy our desires is termed a resource if it is technically feasible, commercially viable, and culturally appropriate

  • Resources can also be classified on a different basis which is listed below:

  1. Based on availability – non-renewable and renewable resources.

  2. Based on origin – Abiotic and Biotic resources.

  • Based on availability-

  1. Non-renewable resources- A non-renewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be replaced at a rate fast enough to keep up with use by natural means. These resources, once exhausted, cannot be renewed. There are four major non-renewable resources: coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear energy.

  2. Renewable resources- A natural resource will replenish to replace the fraction depleted by usage and consumption in a finite or stipulated length of time, either by natural reproduction or other recurrent processes. These resources can be renewed. Renewable resources include hydropower, wind energy, geothermal power, biomass energy (ethanol), and solar energy.

  • Based on origin-

  1. Abiotic resources- All raw non-biotic raw materials, i.e. all raw materials not derived from living creatures, are referred to as abiotic resources. They are non-living things. Fossil fuels, ore, and other mineral raw materials, building minerals like sand, gravel, rock, and industrial minerals like silica sand and potash are among these resources.

  2. Biotic resources- biotic resources are living things. These resources are substances derived from the biosphere, such as living beings and forest products, as well as the materials made from them. This primarily refers to fossil fuels such as gas, coal, and petroleum.
