It possesses the following characteristics:
- The colour of the soil ranges from deep black to grey
- It is ideal for the cultivation of cotton
- Climatic conditions and the material of the parent rock are among the important factors for its formation
- It has high moisture holding capacity and is rich in calcium, potash, carbonate, magnesium and lime etc.
- This type of soil is mainly found in the Deccan areas (Basalt) and is spread throughout the north-western Deccan plateau. This soil is made out of lava residuals. The areas where it is prevalent are Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra, Chhattisgarh, Malwa, Maharashtra and along the Krishna and Godavari valleys
