Recently, The Union Cabinet approved the ratification of amendments to the Constitution of the Universal Postal Union (UPU).
Key Points:
- The 27th UPU Congress held at Abidjan (Cote d’Ivoire) in 2021 adopted several amendments to the constitution of UPU.
Significance:
- These amendments ensure further legal clarity and stability to the Acts of the Union.
- Resolve many long-standing discrepancies in the text and accommodate provisions for ‘acceptance or approval’ of the Acts in consistency with Vienna Conventions on Law of Treaties, 1969.
About Universal Postal Union(UPU):
- Established by: It is a United Nations specialized agency, established by the Treaty of Bern in 1874
- Headquarters: Bern, Switzerland
- Members: The UPU now has 192 member countries.
- India has been a member of the UPU since 1876.
- Objective: It is the primary forum for cooperation between postal sector players. It helps to ensure a truly universal network of up-to-date products and services.
