Why in News?

  • The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying will organise the ‘Sagar Parikrama’ programme to address the problems of coastal fisherfolk in a phased manner. 

About

  • Sagar Parikrama will focus on the sustainable balance between the usage of marine fisheries resources for the food security of the nation and the livelihood of coastal fisher communities.

  • It will also put efforts to adopt measures for the protection of marine ecosystems. 

  • It will involve the engagement of the National Fisheries Development Board, Department of Fisheries, Government of Gujarat, Indian Coast Guard, Fishery Survey of India, Gujarat Maritime Board and fisherman representatives. 

  • The event will witness the sanctions/certificates related to the PM Matsya Sampada Yojana awarded to the progressive fishermen, fish farmers and young fishery entrepreneurs.

  • This will set a suitable example of the Government’s attentiveness towards transforming the fisheries sector and formulating fisheries management plans along with required reforms in the regulatory framework ensuring effective governance in fisheries. 

  • It will also discuss the ways to increase the livelihood opportunities for the fishermen. 

  • It will exert enormous importance on issues like livelihoods, climate change, commerce and security.
