Recently, cases of the Marburg virus, a highly infectious Ebola-like disease, have been confirmed in Ghana.
About Marburg Virus
- It was earlier known as Marburg haemorrhagic fever, which is a severe and fatal hemorrhagic fever.
- Both Marburg and Ebola are filoviruses, and both illnesses have many clinical features.
- Rousettus fruit-bats are considered the natural hosts for the Marburg virus.
- It was first detected in 1967 in Marburg, Germany.
- Fatality rate: The disease has an average fatality rate of around 50%.
- Symptoms: High fever, muscle aches and severe headache.
- Treatment: No approved antiviral treatment or vaccine.
