Unani medicine is a Greek system of medicine that incorporates traditional and unconventional methods to make medicines. Different herbal cures, dietary practices, and regimental therapy are part of Unani medicines. Per the medicine’s fundamental beliefs, every person has their body defences, and these medicines further strengthen the body from within. Unani medicine helps discover the most effective techniques for a person to live a healthy life. In this article, we will learn about Unani formulations and what ‘sufoof’ in the Unani system of medicine is.

Unani Formulations

Unani formulations are mixed herbs, medicinal plants, and different elements to create a mixture that can help a body heal from within. This system of medicine focuses on disease prevention and the health of an individual. Unani focuses on maintaining a correct ecological balance between different elements such as air, water, and food that is free of pollution and diseases. These medicines strengthen optimal health, increasing the body’s inherent resilience against diseases.

Achieving Unani formulations

All other medicinal systems have adjusted their formulations to meet the needs of the time and are made to eradicate the problems more swiftly. In Unani, medicines are made using Majoon, Khameera, Jawarish, and other ingredients. For example, diabetes is one of the most common diseases in many countries. If we use modern medicine to cure the problem, many would just die because these medicines have 70-80% sugar, making the problem worse. This is one of the primary reasons why people prefer Unani medicines.

Concept of formulations of Unani medicines

Per Greek philosophy, Unani medicine results from the belief that our body comprises four primary elements: earth, air, water, and fire. Each element has its characteristics and a cold, hot, wet, or dry temperature. These elements interact to form a new component or compound with a new Mizaj (temperament), such as hot, dry, cold, or wet.

Unani system of medicine: drug formation

Unani medicinal doses are made in such a way that they can achieve the primary goals of pharmaceutical drug processing. Unani formulations are based on certain principles such as palatability, stability, assimilation, and improved safety and efficacy.

These medicines are used and formulated in four different ways. Most are only taken orally to make the body efficient and stronger.

  1. In solid forms: Habib (Pill), Qurs (Tablet), and Safoof (Powder) are taken.

  2. In the semi-solid drugs: Majoon, Jawarish, Khameera Laooq, itrifal, and other medicines are given.

  3. In liquid, you can take: infusion (Kheesanda), Decoction (Joshanda), distillate (Arq), syrup (Sharbat), drops (Qatur), etc.

  4. In steam or gaseous form: Bakhoor (fumigation) and inkabab (steam inhalation), fragrances, and Lakhlakha

Apart from oral drugs, some medicines can be taken in the bathwater (Abzan – sitz bath), enema (Huqna), suppository (Shiyaf), and Pessary (Firzaja), liniment (Tila), among other things.
