Individual Performance

This article discusses individual performance, group performance, and the importance of individual performance.

Evaluating achievements against an individual’s set targets is called individual performance. Job performance refers to the output expected from every employee in terms of quality and quantity. Individual performance is determined by motivation and the ability to do the work. Human resources (HR) plays an important role in the overall success of innovation in companies and in shaping individual performance. Motivational factors play a significant role in individual or group performance. Good working conditions keep employees motivated because they provide a feeling of comfort, safety, and motivation.

Individual Performance

Individual performance usually denotes each employee’s work performance during the performance period. It is assessed by the administrator based on certain criteria such as communication skills, interpersonal behaviours, teamwork, employee development, project management skills, leadership skills, and individual and group business matters such as attaining safety, budget performance, and environmental standards.

For better understanding, let’s consider an example of individual performance. For any participant to receive any payment concerning the bonus, he/she must meet the standard of requirements for each position which will be considered important components of individual performance measures. This determination of individual factors is the responsibility of the individual to whom the participant reports. This means that a project manager is responsible for determining all factors to be considered while evaluating individual performance.

Group Performance

A key function of many groups is task performance–the outcome of certain behavioural or intellectual goals. Task-performing groups include sports teams, decision-making groups, and work teams. Groups tend to benefit from their multiple and potentially complementary skills. A higher number of able or skilled individuals in the group improves the quality of the group. However, research indicates that while several factors inhibit productivity in groups, groups can also reach high productivity levels and perform an endless range of tasks under the right conditions and with the correct composition of group members. Some tasks require a simple addition of effort, while others need each group member to fulfil a particular role.

Group v/s Individual Performance

The ability to perform work with a team of other people by an individual is referred to as group performance. The need to train individuals to work within groups has resulted in the near-universal adoption of group projects in business schools across the globe. A group is a collection of individuals that depends completely on the outcome and process of the individuals or maybe even groups. Groups could even consist of groups related to various projects, such as product groups or an entire store or branch of a group.

Role of Motivational Factors on Individual and Group Performance

Motivational factors have an important role in individual and group performance. Good working conditions motivate employees and provide a sense of safety and comfort in the working environment. Good working conditions include security guards and parking facilities, feeling safe and comfortable in the working environment, working methods, tools and equipment, neat and clean office spaces, and washrooms and rest areas.

Importance of Individual Performance

Managers must understand individual and group performance compatibility, typically concerning goals and incentives. For instance, do the employee’s individual goals contribute to or contradict the achievement of the group goal? Incentives also need to be aligned between individuals and groups. Employees are the “backbone” of any business and can “make or ruin” a company’s reputation.

Role of Training

Training the force to bridge the gap between the current performance and the standard desired sharpens individual and group thinking ability and creativity to improve with time and in a more productive manner. Training programs help employees recognise their organisation’s interests and motivate them to apply their best efforts to achieve their goals. Training enhances individual performance and group performance. Current and new employees miss vital information if they do not receive the proper training. Employees who have been properly trained tend to keep their job longer than those who do not.

Conclusion

Individual performance refers to an individual or employee’s achievements against given targets. Group performance refers to the achievements of a group against set targets. A company’s training programs can increase individual and group performance. Training refers to programs that provide workers with information on new skills or professional development opportunities. Because of training programs, individuals recognise their organisation’s interests and, in turn, apply their best efforts to achieve organisational goals and show high performance on their job.
