In 1978, Melone, then President of Gavilan College in Gilroy, read a newspaper article about a small town in France that hosted an annual garlic festival and claimed to be the “Garlic Capital of the World.”. Gilroy’s garlic production and processing were far greater. Then he gathered farmers and started the event called Gilroy garlic festival. The success of the first garlic festival spawned a second, then a third. The Gilroy Garlic Festival was officially born (and trademarked).

It started as a small event with a handful of farmers and businesses. But it has grown into California’s largest food festival, attracting more people every year. The Gilroy Garlic Festival brings together growers, exhibitors, and visitors worldwide to celebrate Gilroy’s agricultural heritage and promote local businesses. The Festival is the perfect venue for these partners to showcase their award-winning garlic dishes, products, and services. 

The festival celebrates the history of Gilroy’s nationally renowned garlic crop and the strong culinary heritages of both Gilroy and nearby Pajaro Valley. The festival also features live entertainment, carnival rides, games, a beer garden, and many booths selling food and wares.

The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association is a non-profit organisation that organises the annual Gilroy Garlic Festival. The association also helps organise other events that promote Gilroy’s heritage as the “Garlic Capital of the World.” The festival is the largest fundraising event for the Gilroy Garlic Festival Association, which uses the funds to support local charities, such as the Gilroy School District, Santa Clara County Office of Education, and many other nonprofit organisations.
