About NSEA

NSEA, the National Standard Examination in Astronomy, assesses astronomy and astrophysics knowledge among high school students. Typically held at the end of November, it serves as the initial stage of selection for the IOAA. Conducted by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers in collaboration with the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), NSEA has been an annual event since 1987. National Standard Examination in Astronomy Application aims at the selection of aspiring and talented students for the Astronomy Olympiad program. Administered in English, Hindi, and various Indian languages, this examination sees the participation of around 16,000 students from over 1,200 centers.

How to register for NSEA 2023-24?

To register for the NSEA 2023-24 exam, you must complete the following steps before the deadline: Step 1: Begin by identifying the nearest NSE exam center in your city or neighborhood. You can find a comprehensive list of all NSE Centers, including their addresses and phone numbers, here https://www.iapt.org.in/images/nse_2019/centre_list_2019_02042020.pdf Step 2: After locating the center, contact the Centre Coordinator, who will provide you with the NSEA Application Form. Once you receive the form, fill it out and submit the NSEA 2023-24 application to the Centre Coordinator before the NSEA Registration deadline. During the registration process, students have the option to select their preferred language for the exam, either English or Hindi. Additionally, the exam fee must be paid before the specified deadline through a center login.

NSEA 2023-24 Eligibility Criteria

Prior to registering for NSEA 2023-24, the first step is to ensure your eligibility for the exam. Here are the comprehensive eligibility requirements for the exam:
  • Must be eligible to hold an Indian passport as it is exclusively for Indian residents.
  •  Date of birth should be between 1 July 2004 and 30 June 2009, both days inclusive.
  • Must be residing and studying in India since 30 November 2021 or earlier. Must be studying in an Indian school system since 30 November 2021 or earlier.
  • Must not have completed (or scheduled to complete) class 12 board examination earlier than 30 November 2023.
  • Must not have commenced (or planning to commence) studies in a university or equivalent institution by 1 June, 2023.
  • Must not be appearing in NSEJS 2023.
  • Eligibility allows participation through your school or independently
  • Verify your eligibility, as any unethical behavior indicating you don’t meet age or grade requirements leads to instant disqualification, even if you pass the first level.

NSEA 2023- 24 Exam Pattern

Exam Pattern Part (A) includes 48 multiple choice questions with one alternative correct. (+3) marks credit for correct choice & (–1) mark penalty for incorrect choice.  Part (B) includes 12 multiple choice questions with one or more than one correct alternatives. (+6) marks credit for correct answer. To get credit, all the correct option(s) and no incorrect option(s) should be marked
