Unit of Weight

Weight is a force that operates on all things near Earth at all times. With force of gravity, the Earth drags all things downward towards the Earth's core. Weight is measured in newtons, which are units of force in the International System of Units (SI).

Weight, in a practical sense, refers to how heavy or light an object is, regardless of its size or shape. Identifying whether an object is heavy or light is also a simple task.

The practical reference of light and heavy, on the other hand, becomes problematic when estimating the actual weight of an object.

Also we can say the force with which the gravitational field drags an item towards the earth’s surface is known as weight.

Unit of weight-

Now we will take an indepth look at the unit of weight.

Unit of weight-

First let’s see what we call weight, the force with which the gravitational field drags an item towards the earth’s surface is known as weight. We’re all aware that the centre of gravity exerts a force that pulls all objects towards it. The numerical representation of how much force is necessary to force an item to reach the earth’s surface is the unit of weight.

Weight is measured in SI units.

Assume you have a piece of wood with a predetermined mass of 1 kg that falls with a gravitational force of 1 metre per second squared on the ground.

We know that the product of mass plus gravity equals weight, hence in this scenario

 W = 1 kg (of mass) X 1 ms-2  =1N

Also the S.I unit is Newton(N)

Some more units to measure weight-

Dimensional Unit of Weight – The dimensional Unit of weight is calculated by multiplying mass, distance, and time together.

As a result, the Weight Dimensional Unit (W) = [MLT-2 ]

2. CGS unit of weight -The CGS unit of weight is the dyne. The CGS unit stands for centimetres-grams-second,we can convert by dividing 1 Newton by 10000 and convert it to dyne.

1 dyne = 1 g·cm/s2 = 10−5 kg·m/s2 = 10−5 N

or you can say 1 dyne is 1 Newton multiplied by 10,000.

Unit weight of water formula-

The weight of a material in relation to its volume is described by its specific weight, also known as unit weight or weight density. The specific weight of any material is not constant, it varies with temperature and pressure. Formula to calculate it-

γ = ρg, SI unit  in metric system is kgm-3

where γ is unit weight, ρ is density of substance and g is gravitational acceleration.

Water unit weight- Water has a density of 1,000 kgm-3

which equates to 1000*9.8= 9800 kgm-3

Unit weight, unlike density, is not a material’s fixed attribute. It is determined by the gravitational acceleration, which changes depending on location. Pressure can alter results based on the bulk modulus of the material, although it has a less significant effect than the other components at modest pressures.

Conclusion-

In this article we have learned about what we called weight, unit weight and unit weight of water formula. Also weight can change as it depends upon the gravity of the point where the weight is measured. As one might weigh 90 Kgs on Earth it will reduce by 40% on the moon, similarly the more g value the higher the g weight.

Also unit weight is calculated by multiplying its density.
