There are two types of transducers to consider while thinking about them. A sensor is an input transducer, while an actuator is an output transducer. An input transducer, also known as a sensor, detects changes in the environment and turns them into a readable electrical signal. The microphone converts physical sound waves into an electrical signal, which is then transmitted to the amplifier through wires. Input transducers do the opposite of output transducers, or actuators. They convert electrical signals into a different source of energy. A lamp, for example, transforms electricity into light, and a motor, on the other hand, translates electricity into motion.

Need of transducers

It’s difficult to calculate the exact magnitude of physical forces like temperature and pressure. However, if these physical forces are transformed into an electrical signal, their levels may be determined with ease using a meter. Transducer’s  main job is to convert physical forces into electrical signals that can be conveniently handled and transferred for measurement.

Parts of transducer

When it comes to sensor transducers, the sensor head is the component that responds to changes in the environment. The change in the environment could be a magnetic field (remember that an electric current travelling through a conductor generates a magnetic field around it), temperature, pressure, and so on. You must next turn this into a usable electric signal, which necessitates the use of electronics.

A resistor translating induced voltage to current and vice versa could be an example of this. It could also be used as an amplifier to boost a weak signal into something useful. Alternatively, an integrator circuit could be used to convert the rate of change in current to the underlying current waveform.

Sensing element

It is the component of a transducer that reacts to physical sensations. The physical phenomenon determines the sensing element’s reaction.

Transducing element

The transducer’s transduction element translates the sensing element’s output into an electrical signal. The secondary transducer is another name for the transduction element.

Applications of transducer

  • The load on the engines is measured via a transducer.
  • They’re utilised to detect muscle movement, which is known as an acceleromyograph.
  • In an ultrasound machine, transducers are employed.
  • Electrical impulses are converted into acoustic sound by the transducers of a speaker.
  • The antenna has a transducer that converts electromagnetic waves into electrical signals.

Biomedical transducer

Electronic equipment is used to monitor non-electrical factors such as temperature, heart sound, and blood pressure from the human body. The devices that transform biological parameters to electrical impulses are known as transducers. Transduction is the process of conversion. Transducers are devices that transfer one kind of energy into another.

Examples of biomedical transducer

  • A strain gauge attached to the finger measures minor variations in blood volume flowing through the finger.
  • Intraarterial and intravenous pressures are measured in the body.
  • The pulsatile blood volume fluctuations are measured by the LDR, or photoresistor.
  • The Piezoelectric Transducer is used as a pulse sensor to determine a person’s pulse rate.

Difference between transducers and sensors

  1. A transducer aids in the conversion of one form of energy to another. Sensors detect physical quantities and turn them into signals that an instrument can read.
  2. Sensors are used to measure voltage, capacitance, inductance, and ohmic resistance, while transducers convert the measured quantity into a conventional electrical signal such as -10 to +10V DC.
