Average Speed and Average Velocity

In this article we will learn about the concept of average speed, average velocity, formula of average speed and average velocity, difference between average speed and average velocity and more.

Average speed can be defined as the ratio of total speed to the total time taken. The average speed is an important component in determining how long it takes to finish a journey. Average speed is a method that assists us in calculating the rate of travel time and distance. The fact that the speed changes throughout the duration depends on determining the average speed.

The change in position of an object in a given direction divided by the time it takes for the object to move from its initial position to its end position is the average velocity.

Speed

The rate at which object moves is termed as Speed.  It is a scalar quantity that has only magnitude. A fast-moving object moves very fast and covers a desirable distance in a short period of time. A slow-moving object having low speed travels less distance in the same length of time. A zero Speed object is a type of object that does not travel. The pace at which an object’s location changes, measured in metres per second, is referred to as speed. For example, a thing’s speed is one metre per second if it starts at the origin and goes three metres in three seconds. The speed equation is as simple as distance divided by time. To calculate the speed, divide the distance travelled (for example, 3 metres) by the duration (three seconds) given (one metre per second).

Velocity

Velocity can be defined as the speed at which an object varies its position. It is a vector quantity having both magnitude as well as direction. Suppose a person who takes one stride forward and one step back at a rapid pace, always returning to the same starting place. While this would cause a rush of activity, it would also result in a zero velocity. Because the person continually returns to their original position, the motion would never lead to change in position. Because velocity is described as the rate at which the position changes, this motion has zero velocity. If a person in motion needs to accelerate, they must make every effort to raise the distance between them and their starting point. Every effort must be made to make progress in this area.

Average speed

The average speed of an object is the total distance it travels divided by the time it takes to complete the journey. It gives you an indication of how fast the distance is traversed on average. For example, if an object travels at 30 kilometres per hour, it simply means that its position can change 30 kilometres every hour on average. The SI unit for average speed is m2s.we can calculate average speed as:

s=d / t

Here s is the average speed

d is the distance travelled

and t is the total time taken

it can also be written as

average speed=distance/time

Formula of average speed

The following formula is commonly used to calculate the average speed during the course of a motion:

average speed= distance travelled / time travel

Average velocity

The recurrence of displacement with respect to the original position of any particular object in a specific time period is known as average velocity. In simple words, average velocity refers to the rate at which an object can move in relation to time. The SI unit for average velocity, like average speed, is m2/s. In addition, average velocity is defined as the ratio of total displacement to total time taken by any given object. Formula of average velocity is given as:

V= D/ t

Here, V is the Average velocity

 D is the total displacement and

 t is the total time taken

The average velocity has the same direction as the displacement. Even though an object has a variable speed that changes in magnitude frequently, its direction remains the same as the direction of displacement.

Formula of average velocity

Average velocity is calculated by following formula:

average velocity= Δx /Δt=displacement / time

Difference between average speed and average velocity

Average speed

An object’s Average Speed is determined by dividing the distance it has travelled by the time it took to travel that distance. The Average Speed can be used to calculate the average rate at which a body will cover a given distance. m/s, or metres per second, is the SI unit for the average speed. The average speed has no distinct direction. Average speed is a scalar quantity having only magnitude . When travelling in a circular course, the average speed can never be 0.

Average velocity

The displacement with reference to the original or main position of the object divided by the time taken is the Average Velocity. Average Velocity is a Vector quantity. The average velocity is pointing in the same direction as the displacement. There is a definite direction to average velocity. When travelling in a circular track, the average velocity can be 0.

The magnitude of average velocity equals the average speed when an object moves along a straight line. As a result, the numerical relationship between average velocity and average speed is one.

Conclusion

The mean value of a body’s speed over a period of time is called average speed. The change in position of an object in a given direction divided by the time it takes for the object to move from its initial position to its end position is the average velocity. Speed is a scalar quantity that describes “the rate at which an object moves.” The rate at which an object changes its position,” defines Velocity, it is a vector quantity. The average velocity has the same direction as the displacement.
