Frame of Reference in Kinematics

Understanding the concept of a frame of reference is fundamental to the study of kinematics. Kinematics is the branch of physics that studies the motion of objects. One of the most basic concepts of kinematics is the frame of reference, which describes the location of an object with respect to other objects and systems. In kinematics, the frame of reference is the system of axes and bases used to describe and calculate motion. The frame of reference is an abstraction that represents the location and orientation of an object in space and time. We move through three-dimensional space in a two-dimensional plane. This two-dimensional plane is called the reference plane or x-y plane.

Types of Frames of References

There are two types of frames of reference: inertial and non-inertial.

Inertial Frame of Reference

In physics, an inertial frame of reference is an object or system of objects that remain in a state of constant, uniform motion concerning an external frame of reference, regardless of the direction of the force or motion of the other object or system. Inertial frames of reference are sometimes called absolute or standard frames of reference because they are the reference frames used in the study of physics. The concept of an inertial frame of reference applies to the motion of physical bodies and the motion of reference frames. Inertial frames of reference are essential because they are the only frames for which physics equations like the conservation of momentum and energy are meaningful. Because inertia is a property of matter, all inertial frames of reference are also gravitational. 

For example, if we stand on the Earth, we can observe the Sun moving across the sky. We say that the Earth provides the platform for our observations because the Earth is an inertial frame of reference: the Sun appears to be moving from our point of view. We say that an inertial frame of reference is a frame of reference in which an object appears to be at rest.

Non-Inertial Frame of Reference

A non-inertial frame of reference is used in physics to denote an accelerated reference frame with reference to an inertial frame. The concept of non-inertial reference frames has its origins in the relativity of reference. These frames can occur by a rotating body with a constant angular velocity. It has been widely used to describe the motion of celestial bodies, such as the planets, and it is precisely this sort of motion that causes the Earth to rotate.

An example of a non-inertial frame of reference is a moving car. When you are in a car, you are in reference to a non-inertial frame. The car’s motion causes you to perceive the world differently than if you were at rest. Another example of a non-inertial frame of reference is a rotating reference system. The Earth is a rotating reference system. Therefore, if an object is on the Earth, then according to the laws of physics, it is considered an inertial frame of reference. However, if the object is in space, it is in a non-inertial frame of reference.

Types of Coordinate Systems of Frame of References

In physics, the frame of reference is a coordinate system used to describe the position of a body or object relative to a frame of reference. The two most common coordinate systems of frame of reference are the coordinate system of measurement and the coordinate system of observation. The coordinate system of measurement is used to describe the position of a body or object in space; the coordinate system of observation is the system used in which an observer is located. Three spatial dimensions such as height, width, and depth describe both systems.
