Chemical Reactivity of Sodium Carbonate with Water

Sodium carbonate, Na2CO310H2O, is an inorganic chemical with the formula Na2CO3and its multiple hydrates (also referred as washing soda, soda ash, and soda crystals). All of the forms are water-soluble, colourless, odourless salts which produce moderately alkaline solutions in water. It was originally made from the ashes of plants that grew in sodium-rich soils. Since the ashes of these sodium-rich plants differed significantly from those of wood (which were originally used to make potash), sodium carbonate was dubbed “soda ash.”

Sodium carbonate has the chemical formula Na2CO3. It is a naturally occurring inorganic chemical which can be found in mineral fluids and the solid minerals natron, trona, and thermonatrite. Na2CO3 is a water-soluble, white, odourless salt which produces mildly alkaline solutions.

With chemical formula Na2CO3 sodium carbonate is a diazonium salt of carbonic acid.

The alkalizing effect of sodium carbonate is well-known.

Carbonic acid and sodium hydroxide are produced whenever sodium carbonate is dissolved in water.

The ashes of plants grown in sodium-rich soils are used to make sodium carbonate. Sodium carbonate is also referred to as soda ash since the ashes of these sodium-rich plants varied significantly from the ashes of wood.

From sodium chloride and limestone, the Solvay technique produces a significant amount of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3).

Its molecular weight is 105.99 g/mol.

It’s a crystalline white material.

It has a high solubility in water.

At 1600℃ It boils.

It melts at 851℃,.

It has no odour about it.

Chemical properties of sodium carbonate

Sodium carbonate reacts with water to form sodium carbonate.

Water readily interacts with sodium carbonate. Because of the existence of hydroxyl ions, sodium carbonate aqueous solution is alkaline.

Na2CO3 + 2H2O → H2CO3+ 2Na +  2OH-

Aqueous sodium carbonate reacts with carbon dioxide to produce carbon dioxide.

Whenever an aqueous sodium carbonate solution combines with carbon dioxide gas, sodium hydrogen carbonate is formed.

Na2CO3 + H2O + Na2→ 2NaHCO3

Carbon dioxide gas is produced whenever sodium carbonate combines with weak vegetal acids like lime juice.

The Chemical Reactivity of Sodium Carbonate with Water

Water dissolves sodium carbonate…. Na2CO3 is a soluble salt which dissociates to generate sodium ions, and water molecules combine with carbonate to form OH-and HCO3-ions as it does so. That’s why a sodium carbonate solution is slightly basic.

Characteristics of sodium carbonate

It’s a crystalline white solid that’s one of the very few metal carbonates that can be dissolved in water. It’s alkaline, and it makes red litmus blue whenever exposed to it. It contains detergent qualities as a result of the saponification process, that renders fats and grease water miscible.
