Ferns stems

Fern stems or Pteridophytes (Greek: pteron feather, phyton=plant) are the first seedless vascular plants that do not produce fruits or seeds.

Table of Content
  •

The fern plant’s rhizome is its stem. It is available in three primary forms: An upright rhizome is a solid mass that produces a tuft of fronds. This sort of rhizome can be seen on a king fern or a crown fern.

General Characteristics of Pteridophytes:

  • According to them, bryophytes and pteridophytes diverged from a common ancestor of archegoniate terrestrial plants.
  • The plant body, or sporophyte, is composed of the root, stem, and leaves. The mature sporophyte does not require the gametophyte for nourishment.
  • They begin with small annuals and gradually progress to huge perennials (e.g., Azolla)
  • Pteridophytes are primarily terrestrial plants that thrive in moist, shady settings. Some species are aquatic and can be found in permanent ponds (e.g., Azolla. Isoetes, Marsilea. Salvinia).
  • Some xerophytic species include Selaginella rupestris and S. lepidophylla. Equisetum arvense is a horse species native to the United States.
  • Because primary roots are temporary, adventitious roots quickly take their place.
  • On the root, there could be a permanent growing apex.
  • Except for woody ferns, pteridophytes have herbaceous stems (e.g., Angiopteris. Marattia,).

Characteristics of Stems of Pteridophytes:

  • On both the stem and the root, there is a permanent growing apex. Scaly greens (c.g.. Equisetum). Small and sessile (Lycopodium and Selaginella) or large, petiolate, and compound (Lycopodium and Selaginella) (e.g. ferns).
  • The leaf structure of a pteridophyte is used to classify it. Pteridophyta Monopodial or dichotomous branches are common on stems. Unlike spermatophytes, branches do not sprout from the leaf axils.
  • Filiform trichomes grow on the leaves and stem. Stomata are present on both the upper and below surfaces of the leaf.
  • The root and stem’s vascular system, which is composed of xylem and phloem, is highly developed. Because Cambium is lacking, they do not exhibit secondary growth.
  • However, only a few surviving pteridophytes (such as Botrychium and Isoetes) exhibit secondary growth regularly.
  • A protostele (Lycopodium Selaginella) or a siphonostele (Equisetum Ophioglossum pendulum) is a form of stele. Pteris, Nephrolepis, Polystichum) or polycyclic (Pteris, Nephrolepis, Polystichum) (eg. Angiopteris Marattia).
  • Tracheids comprise the xylem, while sieve cells and phloem parenchyma comprise the phloem. However, certain members also have vessels (e.g., Pteris vittata, Pteridium aquilm Nephrolepis cordifolia. Actinoptera radiata).
  • Sieve tubes have also been observed in the phloem of Equiset arvense and Equiset giganteum. Photosynthetic tissue is found only in leaves.
  • The internal tissue of megaphyllous leaves is distinguished by spongey and palisade cells.
  • Spores produced in sporangia are used to increase their population. Sporangia are usually bones on the ventral surface of the leaf.

Conclusion:

In this unit, we studied pteridophytes and their general features of stems. As a result, pteridophytes are categorized as a mesophyte type of plant “Botanical snakes are a form of snake found in the botanical kingdom. They are also known as snakes in the plant kingdom. Another name for them is plant-eating amphibians “Because, like bryophytes, they are fertilized by ernal water sources. Pteridophytes are living plants that range in size from small water plants to enormous tropical tree ferns. According to fossil records, they first arose 400 million years ago, during the late Paleozoic epoch of the Silurian epoch.
