Diabetes insipidus treatment

In diabetes insipidus, the body has the incapacity to secrete adequate amounts of antidiuretic hormone. This is a non-common disorder that leads to fluid imbalance in the body.

Diabetes insipidus is not a common disease, which causes an imbalance in the fluids present in the body. Mainly dehydration and urine production in excess amounts are the main symptoms of these diseases. There is no proper medication for this. For diagnosing this disease, water deprivation tests, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and genetic screening are used.

Diabetes insipidus

In diabetes insipidus, the body has the incapacity to secrete an adequate amount of antidiuretic hormone. This is a non-common disorder that leads to fluid imbalance in the body. Because of this imbalance, an excess amount of urine is produced. It creates the feeling of thirst.

Despite the fact that the terms diabetes insipidus and diabetes mellitus seem to be similar, they are not interrelated. In diabetes mellitus, the level of blood sugar increases and can cause type 1 or type 2 diabetes commonly known by the name of diabetes.

For diabetes insipidus, there is no treatment available. However, few remedies can help in reducing thirst and decrease the urine production level and prohibit dehydration in the body.

Symptoms of diabetes insipidus

The following are the signs and symptoms that help in identifying the diseases:

  • The level of thirst increases.
  • An excess of urine production causes pale yellow colour.
  • The frequency of urine production increases during nighttime.

If someone has a serious condition, he or she tends to drink more fluid content and can produce an excess amount of urine.

The following symptoms are observed in infants with diabetes mellitus:

  • More wet diapers
  • Bedwetting
  • Sleeplessness
  • Increased body temperature or fever
  • Constipation and vomiting
  • Loss of weight
  • Retarded growth rate

Treatment of diabetes insipidus

The treatment process is based upon the kind of diabetes insipidus disease.

Central diabetes insipidus

If somebody has a mild level of diabetes insipidus disease, the intake of water can help in curing it. If the functioning of the pituitary gland or hypothalamus is disturbed because of this, the person needs to consult the doctor first.

Generally, the consumption of synthetic hormones also known as desmopressin can help in treating this. This medicine helps in the replacement of antidiuretic hormone (ADH), which leads to a reduction in urine production. The amount of this medicine depends upon the extent of its effect on the individuals. Apart from this, other medications are also referred by doctors such as chlorpropamide. This helps in the generation of ADH more in the body.

Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus

In this condition, the malfunctioning of the kidney happens vigorously and decompression does not improve the condition. However, one must prefer a low-salt diet in order to decrease the amount of urine production. Apart from that, consumption of water should also increase to avoid dehydration.

In the worst conditions, hydrochlorothiazide drugs help in improvement. If someone notices the interrelationship between increased urine production rate and consumption of these drugs, then they should avoid the medicines after consulting a doctor.

Gestational diabetes insipidus

Regular consumption of desmopressin (synthetic hormone) supports the treatment of gestational diabetes insipidus.

Primary polydipsia

There is no treatment for this, but intake of water can help in reducing the symptoms. If there is any interrelationship between disease and mental health, one should focus on mental health first because it may relieve the disease directly.

Some home-based remedial methods to cure diabetes insipidus

  1. Increased consumption of water: Apart from medicines, one should consume plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Always keep water bottles to manage in every circumstance.
  2. Ready for a medical emergency: The one with a serious condition should always be ready for the medical condition. Hence an individual must always carry a medical alert card. So that doctors can be informed.

Conclusion

In diabetes insipidus, the body has the incapacity to secrete adequate amounts of antidiuretic hormone. Therefore, diabetes insipidus is not a common disease and causes  fluid imbalance in the body.

There is no permanent treatment for this disease. Mainly dehydration and urine production in excess amounts are the main symptoms of this disease. Some home-based remedies help in treating the disease, such as increasing the consumption of water. Apart from medicines, one should consume plenty of water to avoid dehydration and be ready for a medical emergency. The one with a serious condition should always be ready for the medical condition. An individual must always carry a medical alert card so that doctors can be informed.
