Blood Circulatory System Disorders

This article explains what different types of circulatory disorders are, how they occur, and their implications?

Before understanding different types of circulatory system disorders, their types, and what causes them, we should start by knowing what the circulatory system is.

The circulatory system is commonly known as the cardiovascular system. It consists of the heart and all the blood vessels that pass throughout the body. This system is crucial for providing nutrients and oxygen to every part of the body. Diseases that can affect the efficient functioning of the blood circulatory system, causing disorders are:

1. High Blood Pressure or (hypertension)

The normal blood pressure should be around (120/80). Any blood pressure higher than this is termed high blood pressure or hypertension. High blood pressure can prove fatal and may lead to many diseases. If we go deeper into this, 120 is the systolic or pumping pressure. Whereas 80 is the diastolic pressure or the resting pressure. If one gets elevated blood pressure during their checkups, they should start going for routine checkups. If a person has a blood pressure of 140/90 consecutively three to four times, it shows hypertension.

Hypertension may attack vital organs like kidneys, brain, etc. Here, 120mm Hg means the number of millimetres of mercury.

2. Angina Pectoris

Angina pectoris is generally known as chest pain and occurs due to restricted blood flow. It can happen to both men and women of any age, but it is more common in elderly and middle-aged people. When heart muscles lack the appropriate amount of oxygen, it leads to acute chest pain. This is one of the major symptoms of angina pectoris.

3. Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary artery disease is sometimes also referred to as atherosclerosis. This disease affects the vessels that carry blood to the heart muscles. Disorders of the blood circulatory system are very common these days. We need to understand what causes these disorders. Some significant reasons for someone to develop coronary artery disease are the deposition of certain elements such as –

  • Calcium
  • Fat
  • Cholesterol
  • Fibrous tissue

These components make the lumen of arteries narrower than they are supposed to be. These are some major causes of coronary artery disease.

4. Heart Failure

Heart failure occurs when the heart does not pump blood efficiently to meet the body’s needs. Heart failure is often confused with a heart attack or cardiac arrest.

Heart failure is sometimes also referred to as congestive heart failure. The primary reason behind this condition is congestion of the lungs.

5. Heart Attack

Heart attacks, one of the major disorders of the blood circulatory system, occur when the heart’s muscles are damaged. The reason behind the damage could be an inadequate supply of blood. But what causes poor circulation of blood in the body? There could be many reasons, ranging from lack of exercise and a bad diet.

6. Cardiac Arrest

Cardiac arrest happens when the heart stops beating and there is no blood flow. In this case, there is a complete stoppage of the heartbeat.

Now, let’s focus on methods to keep disorders of the blood circulatory system at bay. A few tips for maintaining a healthy circulatory system are:

  • One should all maintain a healthy body mass index (BMI).
  • Quit smoking
  • Exercise most days a week for at least half an hour
  • All kinds of trans fats and processed fats should be avoided
  • Eat healthily and include fruits in your diet plan
  • One should have a balanced diet for a healthy heart and body

These are some preventive measures we need to follow to maintain a healthy blood circulatory system. Being in terms of all these measures and following them will keep your blood moving efficiently and will not cause any health issues.

Conclusion

In this topic, we have covered the basics of blood circulatory system disorders, what they mean and what causes poor circulation of blood in the body. We also learned about the reasons behind these disorders of the blood circulatory system.
