Barr Body

In female mammals, a densely staining inactivated condensed X chromosome is present in each somatic cell and is used as a test for genetic femaleness (as in a foetus). It is also called sex chromatin.

Women are represented by individuals who have two X chromosomes (XX); men are represented by individuals who have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome (XY); and individuals who have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome (XY). X chromosomes are large autosomal chromosomes that have a long and short arm, similar to autosomal chromosomes in size and structure. It has each long arm and one very short arm, which is characteristic of the Y chromosome. It is at the time of meiotic division, once a split happens to generate gametes, or sex cells with half the usual number of chromosomes, that the route to maleness or femaleness begins.

 As a result, one among the gametes (sperm) that are created contains the X chromosome, and the other half contains the Y chromosome. Meiosis occurs when a male XY sex-chromosome pair isolates and passes on an X or Y to each of the gametes (sperm). Normally, only one of the two X chromosomes is present in each female egg cell, despite the fact that females have two Xs. In the case of X-bearing sperm, the eggs fertilised by them are females (XX), whereas the eggs fertilised by Y-bearing sperm are transformed into males (XY).

Barr Body

X chromosomes are found on both X chromosomes in males and females. Female somatic cells really aren’t implicated in sexual reproduction in the same way male somatic cells are. Lyonisation is used to inactivate one of several two X chromosomes in this case. It is understood as a Barr body when this X chromosome is inactive.Mary F. Lyon, a British geneticist, was the first to discover the X-inactivation procedure. 

It is necessary to deactivate one X-chromosome in order to prevent the transmission of unnecessary information to the next generation. When it comes to X-chromosome genes, males and females should have the same amount of expression.Heterochromatin is found around the active X-chromosome; however, heterochromatin is found around the inactive X-chromosome, which is found around the inactive X-chromosome.

 Due to the compacted nature of the inactive X-chromosome, transcription-related molecules cannot access it.It is possible to inhibit the X chromosome from functioning by compressing it into a tiny, thick structure known as the Barr body during X-inactivation.

Barr Body Formula

  • In order to determine how many Barr bodies a person possesses, the following formula can be used: (Xn-1)
  • There are one fewer Barr bodies per X chromosome in a cell than there are X chromosomes in the cell. As an illustration:
  • The number of Barr bodies in a normal female with the genotype 46XX would be one in a normal female.
  • The number of Barr bodies in a normal male with the genotype 46XY would be zero in this case.
  • A male with Klinefelter’s syndrome (whose genotype is 47XXY) would, on the other hand, have only one Barr body, whereas a female would have two.

Formation of Barr Body

Barr bodies are developed whenever an X chromosome is compressed into a thick and tiny body in which the genes are left inactive for a long period of time.It is possible to inactivate any chromosome at any moment in time, and also that chromosome will remain inactive for the duration of the cell’s life. 

As a matter of fact, there will be only each active X chromosome per cell in each organism. Whenever the number of Barr bodies is measured in proportion to the number of X chromosomes, the amount of Barr bodies is one unit lower.

 When attempting to determine what such a Barr body is, it is critical to take mutation into consideration. In the case of Klinefelter syndrome in men, the body of Barr would still be smaller than the body of X chromosomes even when an additional X chromosome is inserted into the body of Barr.

Function of Barr Body

The effectiveness of the Barr body in identifying physiological abnormalities can be used to determine the significance of the Barr body. The Barr body was discovered in the lobes of neutrophils in female cells, and it is a type of protein. That very same form of identification is crucial for trying to report any abnormalities that may have been discovered.Barr bodies are required to regulate the amount of X-linked gene product that is transcribed. 

One of the X chromosomes in a female becomes highly condensed – known as the Barr body – in order to ensure that the dosages of X-linked gene products are consistent between men and females during development. Because of this, proteins that regulate gene transcription are unable to access genetic information stored on the chromosome. Dosage compensation is the term used to describe this situation.

Conclusion

When the X chromosome is inactive in female somatic cells (also known as the Barr body), it is referred to as sex chromatin. X chromosomes are found in two copies in females, while X and Y are found in only one copy in males and one in both. The Barr body is formed when one of the X chromosomes becomes active and the other becomes inactive in a process known as lyonization in almost all of the female somatic cells that do not participate in sexual reproduction. Whenever one X chromosome is turned off, only the minimum number of genetic data is represented, or double or even more. Thus, X-inactivation occurs not only in humans but also across the entire spectrum of organisms in which the apparent lack of a Y- or W-chromosome in the cell determines their gender. It is necessary for both males and females to have the same quantity of X chromosome genes expressed.
