Organisational Structure at NCERT

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is headed by a Director. The Director is supported by four Deputy Directors, one each for administration, academic matters, finance, and planning. The council has four regional centres at Ajmer, Bengaluru, Bhopal, and Shillong, and 20 subject-specific centres.

The academic wing of the NCERT is divided into five divisions, namely, Language, Social Sciences, Science & Mathematics, Educational Technology & Teacher Education, and Planning & Coordination. Each division is headed by a Divisional Head.

History of NCERT

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) was established in 1961 as an advisory body to the Government of India. NCERT’s main goal is to support and advise the federal and state governments on policies and programmes aimed at improving school education quality.

In 1974, the Council was registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The headquarters of NCERT is located in New Delhi with regional offices in Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Mysore, and Shillong. It has a National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) which functions as an apex body for educational planning and administration in India.

The National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005 was the first National Curriculum Framework for School Education in India. It lays down the broad framework and principles that should govern school education from Class I to XII across all boards in the country. The NCF 2005 has been reviewed and updated in 2010 and is currently being implemented in schools.

NCERT has also developed a large number of textbooks, teacher’s guides, and other instructional material for primary, upper-primary, secondary and senior secondary education. These are widely used in schools not only in India but also in other countries where the Indian diaspora is present. NCERT has also undertaken major research studies in school education.

Objectives of NCERT

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) was set up in November 1961. The major goal is to support and advise the federal and state governments on policies and programmes to improve school education quality.

The Council has been playing a key role in the development and implementation of various programmes of school education, including the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005, Textbook Development, Teacher Education, Capacity Building of Educational Functionaries, National Means-Cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS), National Talent Search Examination (NTSE), Nation studies on various aspects of school education. The National Achievement Survey (NAS), conducted by the Council in collaboration with the Institute for Policy Research Science Olympiad (NSO), National Cyber Olympiad (NCO) and Student Achievement Tracking System (SATS).

The Council also carries out surveys and studies on various aspects of school education, collates and analyses data related to educational development and provides consultancy services at the request of Central and State Governments, National and International Agencies. The Council also collaborates with National and International agencies for the promotion of educational research.
