    What Is a Molecule? 

    A molecule is the smallest component of an element in a compound that has that element’s or compound’s chemical properties. Atoms are held together by chemical bonds, which can be either ionic or covalent. Ionic bonds occur when one atom takes electrons from another atom. The atom that loses electrons becomes a positive ion, while the atom that gains electrons becomes a negative ion. The ions are then attracted to each other and form an ionic bond. Covalent bonds occur when atoms share electrons. The atoms form a covalent bond by sharing their valence electrons—the outermost electrons in their electron shells.

      Compounds are molecules that are made up of two or more different elements. The elements in a compound are held together by chemical bonds, which can be either ionic or covalent. Compounds can be either organic or inorganic. Organic compounds are those that contain carbon atoms. Inorganic compounds do not contain carbon atoms. Inorganic compounds tend to be much less complex than organic compounds. Many inorganic compounds are made up of only a few elements, and some, such as water (H₂O) and carbon dioxide (CO₂), are made up of only two elements.

                  Molecules have the chemical properties of the element or compound they are a part of. Compounds have unique chemical properties that are different from the elements they are made up of. For example, water (H₂O) is a compound made up of hydrogen and oxygen atoms. The compound has different properties than the individual atoms—it is liquid at room temperature, while both hydrogen and oxygen are gases at room temperature. Similarly, carbon dioxide (CO₂) is a gas at room temperature, while both carbon and oxygen are solids at room temperature.

Salt (NaCl) is also a compound because it is made up of molecules (one sodium atom and one chlorine atom).  Molecules can exist on their own, but compounds must be bonded together to form molecules.  A cation is a positively charged ion, while an anion is negatively charged. Ions are created when molecules lose or gain electrons.  For water to become salt, one molecule of water must lose one electron to a sodium atom. This creates a cation (sodium ion, Na⁺) and an anion (chloride ion, Cl⁻). These ions are then attracted to each other and bond to form a molecule of salt.
