Breathing and Respiration

Breathing and respiration both are inevitable actions and without these, no living organism will be able to survive. We usually think that both breathing and respiration are the same.

Breathing is nothing but the process through which air passes into and out of the lungs to supply oxygen to all parts of the body. whereas, respiration is the process of taking in oxygen from our surroundings and giving out carbon dioxide. Because the organs we use to breathe and respire are the same as lungs, noses, and other similar organs, it’s simple to be confused. Furthermore, it occurs because both of them need the consumption of oxygen. However, it is necessary to understand the distinction between breathing and respiration to acquire their significance. As a result, we’ll start by looking at their differences to understand better the difference between breathing and respiration:-

Difference between breathing and respiration

Ways in which breathing differs from respiration are:-

  • Definition

Breathing is a process where inhalation of oxygen and exhalation of carbon dioxide takes place, and this process takes place in the lungs.

Respiration is the detailed process where oxygen which we inhale is used to break the glucose into energy which will be used later by the cells of the body, and this process takes place in the cells.

  • Used by

Breathing takes place in the lungs. The sole objective of the lungs is to provide the body with sufficient oxygen and to release the waste gases out of the body.

Respiration usually takes place only in the cells of the body. Usually, cells perform cellular respiration to get energy from glucose and other food molecules. Cells also have a feature to store energy and use it in the future.

  • Process

Breathing is a physical activity or process of exchanging gases.

breathing is a physical process wherefrom the atmosphere air is taken into the body.

Respiration is a chemical process or is a chemical change because it takes in oxygen and uses it to release energy when energy is released, whereas breathing is a physical change since it just takes in oxygen.

  • Energy

When someone is breathing no energy is produced. only respiration is a process where energy is produced as it releases stored molecules and turns them into a form of energy that can be used by the cells in our body. ATP is the form of energy that is produced in the process of respiration.

  • Cells

Breathing is called an extracellular process because the process takes place outside the cells. On the other hand, respiration is an intracellular process because it’s understandable that the whole process takes place inside the cells.

  • Organs

Breathing is a process that takes place or happens due to the organs like the nose, lungs, etc. nose is an important organ in breathing as it is the place from which air is inhaled and the air is exhaled.

Respiration is a process that takes place due to the cells, mitochondria, etc. cell organelles usually carrying out the respiration process.

  • Enzymes

Breathing usually does not use any kind of enzymes, but

The important role of enzymes during the process of respiration is only to assist them in transferring the electrons from one molecule to another.

  • Active or passive

In breathing, when we inhale it is active and when we exhale it is passive. On the other hand, in respiration except for some, no other steps require energy.

Conclusion

The two processes of breathing and respiration are intertwined. Breathing and respiration are two processes that work together to help the body perform its duties. Breathing is required for respiration to occur, and breathing is used to expel the by-products of respiration.

As a result, despite being two distinct functions, they are both necessary for the existence of any living thing. Without these no living organisms can survive in this world.
