In 1917, the Russian Revolution took place when the peasants and working-class people of Russia began revolting against the government of Tsar Nicholas II. The peasants and working-class people were led by Vladimir Lenin and a group of revolutionaries named Bolsheviks. The new communist government led to the creation of the country of the Soviet Union.

Before the Russian revolution occurred, a powerful monarch called the Tsar used to rule the entire of Russia. The Tsar had total control over Russia. Before the Russian Revolution happened, life for the working-class people and the peasants was tough. The peasants and working-class people worked for little pay and they often went without food and water. Along with all these, they were exposed to dangerous working conditions. The aristocratic class treated the peasants like they were slaves to them. The peasants were given a few rights under the law and got treated almost like animals.

Russian Civil War

The Russian Civil War broke out shortly after the October Revolution in 1918. The Russian Civil war resulted in the deaths and suffering of millions of people. The Russian Civil war was fought mainly between the Red Army (“Reds’ ‘), which consisted of the people led by the Bolsheviks and the Whites – army officers. The Whites were supported by other countries such as the United Kingdom, France, the United States, and Japan. On the other hand, the Reds possessed internal support, proving to be much more effective than the Whites. Therefore, the victory belonged to the Bolsheviks. 

The Outcome of the Russian Revolution 

After the Russian Revolution ended, Russia exited World War I. Russia took this step by signing a peace treaty with Germany named the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. The new government within Russia received the total power of all industries and shifted the Russian economy from a rural one to an industrial one. The new government also seized farmland from landholders and distributed it among the peasants. Along with this, the government gave women equal rights to those of men. Russia faced a civil war between the Bolsheviks (also known as the Red Army) and the anti-Bolsheviks (the White Army) from 1918 to 1920. The Bolsheviks became the winners and the new country was named the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics).
