Scientific temper

The term ‘scientific temperament’ was first discovered by the first Prime Minister of India, namely Jawaharlal Nehru, in his book ‘The Discovery of India’.

A Statement on Scientific Temper  prepared by a group of scholars and issued on behalf of the Nehru Center in Bombay in July 1981 mentions that “Scientific Temper includes the acceptance amongst others  on the following basis :

  1. The method of science gives a viable method to acquire knowledge. 
  1. Human problems can be comprehended and solved in terms of knowledge gained by applying the method of science. 
  1. The fullest utilization of the method of science in daily life and every aspect of human endeavour, from ethics to politics and economics, is vital to ensure human survival along with progress. 

Humanism

Humanism is a philosophy that focuses on the importance of human factors rather than looking at religious, divine, or spiritual aspects. Humanism is rooted in the idea that individuals have an ethical responsibility to spend lives that are personally fulfilling and contribute to the greater good for everyone simultaneously. 

Humanism focuses on the significance of human values and dignity. Humanism proposes that individuals can resolve their issues through science and reason. Rather than looking to religious traditions, humanism instead looks at helping people live well, obtain personal growth, and make the world a better place to live in. 

Significance of scientific temper

  1. Scientific temper is vital as it allows civil society’s participation and helps develop a democratic state in a country that leads to the promotion of welfare.
  1. Scientific temper helps find solutions for abnormal weather patterns and natural disasters.
  1. Scientific temper can pull people out of the pool of visually impaired confidence, strange notion, and superstition.
  1. Scientific temper can lift the standards of living of citizens.

  1. Humanism can help eliminate social barriers such as discrimination, gender bias, religious wars, caste discrimination, etc.

  1. Humanism leads to happiness and productivity. No human being can grow without happiness and progress.
