You all have heard about the Indicators. Sometimes indicators are used in chemistry, but sometimes there are biological indicators also. Besides chemistry and biology, there are geographical indications as well. Every type of indicator is important, and indicators are used in all of the above fields. They are used very frequently in Chemistry Laboratories. The identification of chemicals and other substances is made with the use of indicators. Methyl Orange, Litmus Paper, phenolphthalein are all used as indicators for identifying different chemicals in the chemistry lab. In this article, I will discuss the concept and indicators of sustainable development in brief.
Concept and indicators of sustainable development
Indicators are used for measuring concepts and indicators of sustainable development. Some parameters are considered as indicators. Those parameters are zero hunger, quality education, clean water and sanitation, no poverty, good health and decent work, and economic growth. And clean energy, gender equality, and affordability are some parameters that are considered concepts and indicators of sustainable development. Then the experts check the data and analyze the status of concepts and indicators of sustainable development by using these indicators.
If there is zero hunger, then it is obvious that the status of sustainable development is good. But if there is a problem with clean water and sanitation availability, then it is not a good sign. It shows the poor status of sustainable development. So the experts will be able to identify the problem in sustainable development. They will be able to focus on those areas where the status of sustainable development is poor. If there is a lack of quality education, then efforts will be made to enhance the quality of education. So the Indicators have a great role in identifying the status of sustainable development. Here indicators helped identify the problem in sustainable development, and when the problem is exposed, the solution will also be ready.
Environmental Indicators
There were indicators of sustainable development, same as there are environmental indicators as well. Mainly there are five environmental indicators. Those five are food production, human population, biological diversity, resource depletion, the average temperature of the global surface, and concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. These five parameters are considered as the environmental Indicators. These indicators have a great role in measuring the issues of the environment. All of us live in the environment, so studying the environment using these indicators is very important. The problems of the environment should not be ignored.
Concept of Biological indicators
Mainly biological indicators are related to Microbiology. Biological indicators are considered test systems. These test systems consist of viable microorganisms which have a defined resistance against a process of sterilisation. Concept of biological indicators are used to identify the favourable conditions for killing or destroying the Microorganisms.
An example of a biological indicator is Lichen. Usually, lichens live on the surfaces of trees or soil or rock, etc. Lichens are known for their sensitivity towards the toxins present in the air. They are sensitive to toxins present in the air, especially because they depend on the air to obtain the nutrients. The number of lichens and the type of lichens present in a forest indicates whether the forest has clean air or not. So lichens are used to identify the clean air in the forest.
The alterations or changes in the living system of the earth are also measured or identified with the help of biological indicators. Except for lichen, amphibians are also considered good biological indicators because there is a mechanism for the freshwater cycle.
Concept of Geographical Indicators
The concept of Geographical Indicators is said to be those products that have something special or unique qualities related to geography or special geographical origin. Mainly geographical Indicators mean that the product with GI tag is special and consists of special characteristics because of its origin in that particular place. The place is related to geography, meaning a product has very special characteristics because of its origin in that geographical area; those products are considered geographical Indicators.
As there is a region in France named Champagne, the champagne is the geographical Indicator of that Champagne area of France. There are approximately 370 geographical Indicators in our country India. So geographical Indicators have a great role in identifying special products produced because of special geographical origin.

There are different types of Indicators in our universe. Some are biological indicators, chemical indicators, geographical Indicators, and some are biological indicators. All Indicators have a great role in enhancing our lives. I have discussed the biological, chemical, geographical, and environmental Indicators above.
