India is a land filled with natural diversities. The topography of India contains almost all types of landforms and relief features. India boasts relief features like plains, mountains, valleys, plateaus, drainage systems, deserts. India has one of the most extensive mountain ranges and is a part of the new fold mountain type. Amidst these ranges, India has some of the highest peaks. India is also the home of the second tallest point above the level of the sea- the K2 (8611 m)in Jammu and Kashmir . Each state through which a mountain range has passed has its own highest peak or point. 

Highest Peaks in States of India

The mountain system in India is made up of new fold mountains. The Indian mountain ranges support a diversified ecosystem and are extremely crucial for regulating the climatic conditions prevailing all over the country. It is due to the Himalayan ranges that we have the tropical monsoon type of climate. These ranges also boast the highest peaks in states of India. India has the following relief features:

  • The desert region
  • The Coastal region
  • The Himalayas
  • The Peninsular region
  • Indo-Gangetic region
  • The Islands

Highest Peaks in Indian States

There are around 148 high peaks found all over India. The highest peaks in the states of India is K2 in Jammu and Kashmir. The highest in the world is found in Nepal (Mt. Everest peak). All of these peaks are parts of one or several ranges of mountain systems found in India. Some of those highest peaks in no particular order are given below:

  • K2 – Located in Jammu & Kashmir, it is the highest peak here. It belongs to the Karakoram range.
  • Nanda Devi- It is in the state of Uttarakhand. It belongs to the Garhwal range. 
  • Kanchenjunga- It is the third tallest peak and is located in the interim of Nepal and Sikkim. It is a part of the Himalayan ranges.
  • Sandakphu- It is located in West Bengal and is a part of the Singalila Ridge of the Eastern Himalayas. 
  • Anamudi- It is found in Kerala. It is a part of the Western Ghats.
  • Deomali- Located in Orissa and it belongs to the Eastern Ghats. 
  •  Doddabetta – Tamil Nadu
  • Anamudi – Kerala
  • Sandakphu – West Bengal
  • Saramati – Myanmar- Nagaland
  • Kangto – Arunachal Pradesh
  • Reo Purgyill – Himachal Pradesh
  • Mt. Tempu – Manipur

Highest Mountain Points in States

The highest mountain points are determined according to the maximum height any given peak is at. The particular altitude of mountain peak found naturally in every state is the highest peak. The highest peaks in the states of India are classified according to the altitude measurement. 

Relief Features According to States

States like West Bengal, Jammu, Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Sikkim, Karnataka, Maharashtra have most of the high peaks found in India. The reliefs are:

  • The Eastern Ghats – Jindhagada Peak (1699m)
  • The Himalayas – K2 (8611m)
  • The Western Ghats – Anamudi (2695 m)
  • Shivalik – Changabang (6864 m)
  • Aravalli – Guru Shikhar (1722 m)
  • Nilgiris – Doddabetta (2637 m)
  • Satpura – Dhupgarh (1350 m)
  • Vindhya – Vindhyachal (752 m)
