MPPSC 2023: Exam Date, List of Exams, Eligibility Criteria, Qualification » MPPSC Study Materials » Environment and Ecology » Greenhouse Gases

Greenhouse Gases

This study is based on greenhouse gases and their impact on the environment and the ecology. The concept of greenhouse gases and their effects will be discussed in elaborate detail.

Greenhouse gases play a quite significant role in the environment and it also puts effects on the lives of all living beings. This document will consist of valuable data regarding the influence of greenhouse gases on the environment. It is important to assert that these gases have the capability of absorbing the radiant energy that is released from the earth’s surface. There is a specific procedure to create a greenhouse effect which will be discussed in the centre part of the document.

What are greenhouse gases?

The gases that have the ability to participate in the greenhouse effect procedure are greenhouse gases. The gases that can absorb the net heat energy that the surface of the earth emits and that can re-radiate it back to the surface of the earth are capable of creating the greenhouse effect. These gases have a significant impact on the energy storage of the earth, however; the amount of it in the total amount of atmospheric gases is too less. Greenhouse gases have the ability to change the climate of the earth to a drastic level and this impact is becoming more relevant as per every passing day and generation. The concentration of greenhouse gases is much dependent on the temperature of the surrounding atmosphere.

Concept of the greenhouse effect

The greenhouse gases are functional within the atmosphere to absorb the infrared radiation or the net heat energy that is emitted from the surface of the earth and after absorption, these gases re-radiant the heat back to the surface of the earth. It is called the greenhouse effect, where the heat is staying ultimately within the territory it came from. There are a number of familiar gases that participate in this process and have the attributes to be greenhouse gas such as carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), etc. This way greenhouse gases play a pivotal role in changing the climate of the earth over all the years. The climatic changes depend on greenhouse concentration and greenhouse concentration depends on the temperature of the earth. On warm days the concentration happens to be very high and on cold days the concentration is seemingly low.

Human activities, vegetation, soil, ocean, etc. play vital roles within this process as these contribute to the concentration process. The industrial revolution is another significant thing that can be a reason for the growth of greenhouse concentration in the atmosphere. Modern times, and the lifestyle that human beings live nowadays, put an identifiable important influence on the power of greenhouse gases as usage of them have increased due to using advanced gadgets. These sorts of events are leading to a higher concentration of gases which is directly influencing the climate to the next level. These effects are not good for the living beings or the environment as the temperature is getting high and higher concentration is creating health issues as well.

Effect of greenhouse gases on the environment

The effects of specific greenhouse gases depending on the environment are dependent on their chemical nature. There are certain gases that can absorb infrared radiation to a high capacity and there are some that can only do it to a very limited extent. There is a term widely used in this context is, radiate forcing which is a measurement of the power of greenhouse gas or any other climate changing attribute. This power is measured against their capability of putting impact on the radiant energy that is present within the surface of the earth. It can be asserted that the advancement of industries is leading to the release of more greenhouse gases and as the pollution is increasing the amount is getting higher too. Therefore, the amount of gases that can participate in creating the greenhouse effect is enhancing as well which is significantly changing the environmental conditions and climatic situations.

Impacts of greenhouse gases on the ecology

The temperature is getting high because of the industrial revolution and there are health effects that are increasing as well. The reason behind health issues is that greenhouse gases increase air pollution that can create health issues like bronchitis, respiratory diseases, etc., and on the other hand, it is also increasing the heat that can create skin diseases too. Food supply disruption, wildfires, extreme weather changes are a number of impacts that greenhouse gases put on the ecology. The main greenhouse gases are water vapour, methane, carbon dioxide, etc. and some minor examples are nitrous oxides, ozone, etc.

Conclusion

The entire document discusses the concept of the greenhouse effect and how it impacts the environment and the ecology. There are mentions regarding major and minor greenhouse gases and this differentiation is done as per their capacity to absorb net heat energy. This data will help in understanding how greenhouse gases have changed the climatic circumstance of the earth in the past few years and the way it is causing health damages to living beings.

Ans : There are some gases that absorb the heat that is released from the surface of the earth and this absorption of emitting energy is done within the thermal infrared range. After absorption, the heat is sent back to the surface again and this procedure is known as the greenhouse effect.

Ans : Carbon dioxide, nitrous oxides, ozone, chlorofluorocarbon, methane, water vapour are some significant examples of greenhouse gases.

Ans : The greenhouse gases do not let the radiant energy leave the surface of the earth by absorbing and re-radiating them to the surface. This leads to an increase in the total heat in the atmosphere causing climatic changes. The release of greenhouse gases is increasing due to pollution and so as the climatic changes are becoming more relevant house gases lead to climatic changes.
