Green India Mission

Green India Mission is a mission under NAPCC and the main aim is to protect , restore forests all over India. In the border spectrum it is related to the global business environment.

Green India Mission was launched in 2004 and it is under the National Action Plan on Climate Change. The main objective of this mission has been considered as a protector of biological resources for the nation and for identifying the major impact on the sustainable ecology. The main aim of the Green India Mission is to rescue and protect the forests and to respond to climate change through the adoption of mitigation measures. GIM focuses on the numerous ecosystem services which include biodiversity, biomass, water and many more. 

Overview of Green India Mission 

GIM is one of the eight missions under the NAPCC and enhances the diminishing forest by preserving the forest. There are few objectives of Green India Mission and that are to protect and enhance the forest livelihood in India. The Indian government has determined to increase the job opportunities to enhance the income resources for the people. GIM has taken aim to covergancy with the complementary scheme and campaigns for the better collaboration to develop the forests along with the fringe areas within sustainable way. The way has been determined to identify the challenges which have been faced by the environment and the forest sector. Both the public and private sectors of the grass root level are involved with the local communities to plan and implement GIM across the nation. 

Connection of Green Indian Mission with global environment and ecology 

The mission of Green India with the global environment and ecology and this mission has a significant unique contribution to other missions as well. Some significant contributions are, 

Water security and to prove a major maintenance on the hydrological cycle by regulating water flows along with the controlling of water flows of the rivers and streams. Providing livelihood securities for the local communities and food security is another objective. Maintenance of agricultural productivity is another key reason for the protection of the forest community. The sustainable management policy of the Green India Mission is to transform the forests of the nation into the carbon dioxide sink. The storage of the carbon stocks has been estimated to increase from 624 million to 662 million.  

Objective and goals related to the mission 

There are few objectives of Green India Mission and that are, 

  • To reinstall, preserve and build up the falling forests in India
  • To respond in the climate changes through adopting a combination along with the solution measures 
  • To provide job opportunities based on the forest livelihood income 
  • To boost up the Carbon sequestration by 65 million tons in coming future

The goals of the Green India Mission has been listed below, 

  • The Indian government can improve the quality of the forests and ecosystem services which includes open forests, moderate dense forest and the grasslands 
  • Eco restoration of the environment such as scrubbing and shifting of the cultivation areas, mangroves and cold desserts 
  • Enhancing the quality of the forests along with the cover of the tress in urban and non urban areas 
  • Improving of cover of the trees and forests on the marginal agricultural land under the social forestry department 

Difference between GIM and other NAPCC mission 

Green India Mission is the preliminary stages of the one year which is already missed in the other missions of NAPCC. One of the key differences between the Green India Mission and other NAPCC missions is the conventional afforestation programme which is related to emphasize the landscape approach mission. Landscape is the wide range area of the forest or non forest land and to meet the policy based on the national and state government rules. The mission of the National Action plan is to expand ecological sustainability to develop India’s pathway and also to address climate changes as well. The mission of the NAPCC consists of eight national missions in certain areas such as solar energy, Green India, Strategic climate change and enhancing energy efficiency. 

Report highlights 

The project scheme was proposed for ten years with an outline of 70 crores rupees. The Indian Government set a target of GIM on behalf of NDC to submit to the UNFC on climate changes. The committee of the Green Mission India has reported that the afforestation was done under the mission where the main intention is to increase the number of the trees without giving attention to the condition of soil and climates. The forests had various numbers of trees with different types along with the variety of sizes and the trees have been grown within the normal temperature.

The goal of the GIM is to cover the forest and trees under the social forestry department. The difference between the mission of the NAPCC and the GIM has been described as well.
