MPPSC 2023: Exam Date, List of Exams, Eligibility Criteria, Qualification » MPPSC Study Materials » Environment and Ecology » Green Crackers

Green Crackers

Compared to regular crackers, green crackers are not completely free from pollution but are considered to make less pollution in the environment and help to maintain the ecology. There is a restriction in the decibels for green crackers which range from 100-130 decibels.

In India, the Supreme Court has clarified that there would not be a total ban on firecrackers but also a restriction has been implemented on the usage of these. The harmful elements are used in the firecrackers which are potentially harmful to the health of the senior citizens and the children. Firecrackers that contain barium salts are banned in India and the government has encouraged the sale of green crackers as this is not harmful to the health and for the environment. In the green crackers, lithium, barium, arsenic and leads are avoided. All the popular firecrackers have green versions of them.

Components of green crackers

CSIR-NEERI has proposed the formulation of green crackers in specific ways and has instructed to use green crackers instead of harmful firecrackers. Keeping the concern of rising air pollution, many states of India have banned the use of firecrackers and many states have banned it. For this reason, the demands for green crackers are rising and are said to be different from the traditional firecrackers.

The idea of green crackers is proposed by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute and is said to contribute less negatively to the environment and reduce the rate of air pollution. Alternative law materials are used in the making process of green crackers which make it eco-friendly and tend to have lesser impact on the environment. The dust produced by lighting these green crackers are suppressed and the emission of the particles is reduced as well.

The sounds that are produced from green crackers are controlled as well up to 100 decibels to 130 decibels. These green crackers are claimed to be eco-friendly because they do not contain aluminium, potassium nitrate, and barium. For these significant advantages, the green crackers are significantly more expensive than the regular traditional firecrackers.

Advantages of green crackers

The green crackers can be found in any government-registered shop. Apart from the government-registered shop, people can buy green crackers from the online shop. The Supreme Court has said that celebration cannot be done by harming the environment and reducing the balance of ecology. However, in this context, the Supreme Court has banned the use of chemical traditional firecrackers. Delhi, Assam, Karnataka, Punjab have agreed to the statement of the Supreme court and banned the sale in respective states as well. The advantages of green crackers would be enlisted furthermore-

AdvantagesAnalysis
Makes less pollutionDue to the absence of harmful chemical materials, these green crackers are best known to make less pollution in the environment and hence, the ecological balance can be maintained further. A positive impact on the environment is clearly observed. 30% less environmental pollution is observed
Reduced emissionThe dust is suppressed and the emission of the particles is reduced. As the dust suppressant, water vapour is released and gaseous emission is diluted furthermore in this context which makes these eco-friendly

Types of green crackers

There are several types of green crackers that are enlisted by the Government of India and the different types would further be discussed in this section. The three main green crackers are-

  • SWAS (Safe water releaser) – These kinds of crackers release vapour in the air in the form of water. These do not contain potassium nitrate. The released dust is reduced by approximately 30%.
  • STAR (Safe thermite cracker)- Particulate matter disposals are reduced in these kinds of firecrackers. The intensity of the sound is reduced as well.
  • SAFAL (Safe Minimal Aluminium)- In these firecrackers, aluminium is used in possibly minimum amounts. In these, magnesium is used instead of aluminium. Compared to the traditional crackers, the intensity of the sounds is reduced.

Difference between traditional and green crackers

It has not been claimed that there is a complete absence of polluting chemicals in the green crackers but the quantity is reduced significantly. The emission rate is lowered by 30%. In the traditional firecrackers, thermite or caracoles are used dominantly. On the other hand, different colouring agents that are harmful to human health and the environment are used as well such as Strontium, sodium, barium and calcium salts.

With suppression of the dust, the quality of the air can be maintained significantly. In this way, the health of the environment can be balanced as well. On the box of the green crackers, a code is provided and buyers need to scan that come with using the NEERI mobile app for identifying the green crackers.

Conclusion

It can be concluded that after evaluating the harmful effects of traditional firecrackers, the Supreme Court has restricted the use of these. Hence, the government has encouraged the use of green crackers that was first proposed by CSIR-NEERI. 30% fewer emissions have been observed and less air pollution has been noticed with using these green crackers.

It restricted the decibel of sound as well. The fewer presence of harmful chemicals such as lithium, barium has made it more acceptable to the public. However, these are more expensive than the traditional firecrackers, which need to be reduced for expanding their acceptance.
