The programme development system - Planning execution and evaluation - has been discussed here.

The word ‘question’ denotes a request for gathering some information about a particular thing. There are two different types of questions. Those are Open-ended and closed-ended questions. With the help of these two types of questions, people can get each and every type of question answered. Which helps them to get compact information about their queries? We will discuss that here.

Open and closed questions:

In every type of question such as open and closed questions, the basic thing is to answer properly. People can answer questions depending on the types of questions. Answers can be one word and can also be descriptive as well. There have two different types of questions open and closed questions in counselling, those are discussed below-

Open-ended question- In the case of open-ended questions among open and closed questions, the answers cannot be very simple. That means people cannot answer by using ‘yes’ or ‘no’ only. They have to describe the answer according to the question. In the case of open-ended questions, people can describe the answers properly as well as they are also free to expose their feelings by the question on the mentioned matter. People can also describe the topic with the help of some examples or real facts, diagrams, scopes, and conclusions. The open-ended question is much better than the close-ended questions in some cases. The open-ended questions can provide more information about the topic or questions. In open-ended questions, the answers can be unique and informative with people’s own words. With the help of some words, the open-ended questions have constructed the 5W+1H format. Following the rules, people can start an open-ended question using What, Where, Who, Which, When and How. When a person uses these mentioned words in their question, the answers have to be descriptive. In case of gaining a review of any products and services or sharing experiences, the questions are asked. Therefore, we can say that these open-ended questions are used to gather knowledge for quality purposes. An example of an open-ended question is

  •       Explain your experience about your last tour.
  •       What is your name?
  •       How to behave with seniors?

Close-ended question: – In this case, where researchers provide some options, and people need to choose an option, that type of question is called closed-ended questions. A close-ended question can always give a response by the answer. People have to choose an answer from some options like ‘yes’ or ‘no’ etc. In the case of a survey, these close-ended questions are used. In order to give any rating after using any products or services, there are also closed-ended questions. For quantitative purposes, close-ended questions are used. There are some different types of close-ended questions. Those are

  •       Dichotomous Questions
  •       Multiple-choice questions

When a person answers with the help of ‘yes’ or ‘no’, ‘true’ or ‘false’, those types of questions are called  Dichotomous Questions.

In the case of multiple choice questions, the answerer has some different types of options. From those different options, they need to choose anyone.

The advantage of open-ended questions is people can provide so much information about the question. It also helps to provide an infinity range to answer properly. It also can serve to develop qualitative data. The disadvantages are these types of questions are too much time taking. Answerers need to describe the answers. Nowadays, people are very busy, so when they see that they need to describe the answers to give feedback on their consuming products or services, they skip those questions.

The basic advantage of a close-ended question is that it is easy to answer, time-saving, and the rate of response is also high. The disadvantages are that it is difficult to interpret, sometimes answers are insufficient, and it does not provide the freedom to provide the answers by own words.
