  •

This content is based on Bereavement along with its various aspects and critically sheds light on the impact of Bereavement on human life. Furthermore, this content also includes the “Freud’s Model of Bereavement” to enrich the quality of the content. It has its significant stages like the “actual and immediate phase”, “grief through the years until aging;”, and “bereavement in old age”. It is actually defined as a period that shows the after-death mourning and grief for a specific period of time. It has been observed that bereavement is not only related to death loss, it is also related to the resultant of “losing a spouse in a divorce”.

Meaning of bereavement

Bereavement is defined as the state of feeling when someone loses their loved ones due to death and after this situation, they undergo loneliness and sadness for a period of time. As early said in this context that bereavement is not always related to the death of the loved ones it is also observed when someone faced divorce-related issues. On the other hand, it has been also observed in children when their friends shift to another state or even change their education sector.

Various factors determine the length of the bereavement

Bereavement is not always similar to different persons because it is a feeling which is aligned with the specific situation. Furthermore, the time period of the bereavement is based on various factors, some of them are:

  • Time of the individual’s age when they lose their closest person.
  • The specific reason behind the loss is also very crucial for determining the length of the individual.
  • The connection or relationship that is associated with the lost person. It is the most important aspect in the case of determination of the bereavement length.
  • Anticipation and Prediction of the loss is also vital factor.

Bereavement leave

Bereavement leave is also known as compassionate leave which is defined as the “paid time off category” and it is taken or used by the employees when they lose their friends and family members. These kinds of leaves are taken by the employees due to many reasons such as for conducting the necessary rituals, maintaining the formalities if any and this time also beneficial that gives them a specific time for grief and many more. However, employees usually allow 2 to 5 days for their bereavement leave on average and there is no such kind of official rules for the employees for their bereavement leave.

Freud’s Model of Bereavement

Personal attachment is the main motif of Freud’s Model of Bereavement and this model defines that an individual is stressed when they lost their loved one and in this situation, they are searching for the attachment which they lost. Freud defines mourning as a state that is justified as the detachment from the close persons or the loved person and he also said that the mourning is a special state in Bereavement which is also melancholia when the mourning occurs in a wrong way. Melancholia is the reflection of depression when someone totally loses their pleasure and also when someone feels they lost every sickle thing in their life.

Biological influence on the grief through Bereavement

Research on Bereavement and its impact on lead grief is associated with stressors and grief is responsible for the changes of the immune system, cardiovascular system, endocrine system, autonomic nervous system, and many more. Furthermore, all the actions that take place due to bereavement are influenced via the function of the brain, a recent study shows that it also occurs due to the activity of the neurotransmitters.

Every emotional activity of humans is controlled by the adrenaline hormone which is secreted from the adrenaline gland and Bereavement grief can modify the hormonal balance of the adrenaline hormone. Cortisol hormone which is also known as the stress hormone also impacted due to Bereavement grief. It has been observed that high levels of cortisol hormone are released due to Bereavement grief and high levels of cortisol in turn increase heart-related disease in the human body.

Conclusion

It has been critically discussed about bereavement and its impact along with the factors that are associated with it. It is the situation when someone loses their loved one due to death and other reasons, mostly death is the prime reason behind bereavement grief. Furthermore, the length of this situation can vary according to the individual’s age, situation, relation, and reason with the lost person. According to the study, it has been identified that their various influences of the biological hormones are associated with bereavements such as adrenaline, cortisol, and many others. Cortisol is a stress hormone that imbalances through this situation and increases the heart-related risk among the individual
